Feeding

For the first 6 months, feed on demand.

Newborns typically eat every 2–3 hours, but always follow hunger cues. In the early weeks, it’s

generally recommended not to let baby go longer than about 3 hours during the day without

feeding (your pediatric provider may give specific guidance for your baby).

Crying is a late hunger cue. Try to feed before baby becomes very upset.

Infant Hunger Cues

Early cues (respond promptly):

● Bobbing or turning head

● Opening mouth

● Wriggling, clenching fists

● Hands to face, chewing fingers

● Lip-licking, sucking noises

Breastfeeding

  • Feed on demand. Breastfed babies often feed more frequently than formula-fed babies.

  • Cluster feeding (very frequent feeding in short periods) is normal, especially during

  • growth spurts.

  • It helps build milk supply and support development.

Bottle Feeding

Feed on demand, typically every 2–3 hours in early months.

Use age-appropriate volumes (follow your pediatrician’s guidance).

Do not force baby to finish the bottle.

If baby stops early, they may be full or need to burp.

Burp, pause, and watch for cues before offering more.

Introducing Solids (Around 5=6 months)

Major organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and World Health Organization

recommend exclusive milk feeding for about 6 months.

● Look for readiness signs:

○ Sitting with support

○ Good head control

○ Interest in food

● “Food before one is just for fun” (meaning milk remains primary nutrition).

● Solids are for exploration and skill-building.

● Start with once per day and gradually increase.

● Milk (breastmilk or formula) remains the main nutrition source until 12 months.

Baby Sleep

Let your baby sleep as much as they need. Sleep supports healthy growth, memory, immune development, and nervous system regulation. Newborn sleep is often irregular, and frequent waking or feeding is normal.

Safe Sleep

For every sleep, place your baby:

  • On their back

  • On a firm, flat surface

  • In the same room as parents (not the same bed)

  • Without pillows, blankets, toys, or other soft items in the sleep area

Skin-to-Skin & Contact Naps

Skin-to-skin contact helps regulate your baby's heart rate, breathing, and temperature while supporting bonding and emotional well-being. Contact naps are a normal part of infant development.

Sleep Development

Around 5–6 months, many babies begin to develop more predictable nap schedules and longer stretches of nighttime sleep. Every baby develops at their own pace.

Diapering

Frequent diaper changes help protect your baby's skin, prevent rashes, and reduce the risk of infection.

For girls:

  • Change soiled diapers promptly.

  • Always wipe front to back.

  • A small amount of blood-tinged discharge in the first days of life can be normal.

For boys:

  • Uncircumcised: Clean only the outside; never force the foreskin back.

  • Circumcised: Gently clean the area and follow your pediatrician's care instructions.

Poop diaper tips:

  • Change soon after a bowel movement.

  • It's okay to wait briefly if your baby is still stooling.

  • Gentle tummy massage or bicycle-leg movements may help relieve gas afterward.
